Laguna Beach : Auditors Find No Losses in Post Office Burglary
Laguna Beach residents had to go elsewhere Monday morning to mail parcels and buy stamps after a weekend break-in at the post office on Forest Avenue forced postal inspectors to close the office for an audit.
Although the audit, which lasted until about noon, revealed nothing missing, Caryl Byrd of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s Long Beach office said inspectors do not yet know how the break-in occurred. No windows or doors appeared to have been forced, but there were pry marks along the counter near the cash drawer.
Burglarizing a post office carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $1,000 fine.
The break-in, which occurred sometime after 6:30 p.m. Friday, was discovered when a clerk arrived at 8:30 a.m. Monday, said Ken LaCarra, manager of customer services.
