Susan Montgomery has become the first woman executive of a Long Beach YMCA. She is the new executive director of the Fairfield Family YMCA, which serves North Long Beach and Bixby Knolls. She had served as associate executive director of the Weingart-Lakewood branch since 1981.

Joseph Stits has been named principal of Somerset Continuation High School in the Bellflower Unified School District. He replaces Marilyn McDowell, who asked to be reassigned as assistant principal at Mayfair High School. McDowell takes the place of Bonnie Panagos, who chose to return to teaching.

Glenn Hutchinson has been temporarily appointed law enforcement coordinator for the City of Bellflower, replacing Anton Brykoski, who is on medical leave. A retired Los Angeles County deputy sheriff, Hutchinson will coordinate Bellflower’s Neighborhood Watch program, traffic school, parking control officers and crossing guards until November, when Brykoski is to return.

Yoshio C. Nakamura of Whittier has been named vice president of community and student services at Rio Hondo College in Whittier. Nakamura is one of the college’s original employees. He started his tenure in 1963 as chairman of the Fine Arts Department. He has been dean of community and student services since 1973.

Gisele Schoniger of Downey and Charles M. Trebes of Lakewood, both students in ornamental horticulture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, have each received $1,000 scholarships from the university.

Liberato V. Mukul of Cerritos, a freshman architecture student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, has received a $600 Helen V. Sandercock Scholarship.

Kathryn Omdahl, a student at Cal State Long Beach, has received a $500 Laura E. Settle Scholarship from the California Retired Teachers Assn. The scholarship fund was established in 1952 as a memorial to the association’s first president. Omdahl, an education student, is student teaching in London as part of an international exchange program. The association also awarded a $500 scholarship to Lillian Sanchez, an entering junior at Cal State Long Beach.

Helen Hibbing of Bellflower has been selected to join the law review at Western State University College of Law in Fullerton.
