Bait, Traps Set Out for Oriental Fruit Flies

Los Angeles County agriculture officials said Wednesday they expect to thwart any possible infestation after the latest discovery in Long Beach of four crop-threatening Oriental fruit flies.

Bob Atkins, supervisor in charge of pest detection, said bait of methyl eugenol (a sex attracter) laced with the insecticide Dibrom was being placed throughout a 10-square-mile area. He called it “a very effective lure.”

In addition, a 90-square-mile area was being spotted with traps.
