Giving back the Nobel Prize medal he stole from University of California, Berkeley, physicist Emilio Segre during a two-year series of burglaries could bring a reduction in sentence for Eugene Williams of Walnut Creek, Superior Court Judge Richard Arnason said in Martinez. But hardly anyone expected to see the award again. “It was gold and probably melted down,” said prosecutor Barbara Zunigas. Williams was sentenced to 11 years and 4 months in prison after guilty pleas by himself and his wife, Jutta, in connection with burglaries that netted up to $3 million in jewelry, antiques and other property.
