Choi’s Two Touchdown Runs Pace Rowland Over Sunny Hills
Tom Choi scored two second-half touchdowns, the second on an 88-yard dash in the fourth quarter, lead Rowland past Sunny Hills, 23-14, in the season opener for both teams Friday night in Spaulding Stadium.
Choi carried the ball just five times, but led all rushers with 113 yards. His fourth-quarter touchdown put the game away for the Raiders.
The defending Freeway League champion along with Fullerton and La Habra, Sunny Hills led but once, late in the first quarter when Ric DeFazio caught a 2-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Painton.
Rowland regained the lead four minutes later when on fourth and 14, quarterback Dave Hansen hooked up with Russ Goo on a 23-yard scoring play.
Choi scored the first of his touchdowns with three minutes left in the third quarter on a 23 yard run. Dave Wackerman brought Sunny Hills within two points on a 2-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter only to have Choi break the Lancers’ back with his long touchdown run.
