Bill Elliott equaled a season record and broke the Dover Downs International Speedway qualifying mark as he won the pole for today’s Delaware 500 Grand National stock car race at Dover, Del.
Elliott, driving a Ford Thunderbird, tied David Pearson’s 1974 single-season record of 11 superspeedway poles as he averaged 141.543 m.p.h. That erased the track record of 140.807 set in 1984 by Ricky Rudd.
