General Dynamics Corp., the nation’s third-largest defense contractor, reached a tentative contract agreement with the United Auto Workers, which represents 5,000 workers in three states, company officials said. The agreement came in the early morning, nearly three hours after the old pact had expired and picket lines were set up at two Michigan plants and a site in Lima, Ohio, company spokesman Pete Connolly said in Warren, Mich. The tentative settlement covers production and maintenance employees at tank plants in Warren and Lima and component plants at Sterling Heights, Center Line and Scranton, Pa.
