FM radio frequency 91.7 will be assigned to Palm Desert, Calif., by the Federal Communications Commission on Sept. 26, the FCC said this week.

The change in the commission’s table of assignments was requested by USC, which agreed to apply for permission to build a station to operate on that frequency if it were assigned.

Others can also apply for permission to construct a station during a filing window that opens Sept. 27 and closes Oct. 28. If only one applicant files during that period, it will get the license automatically if otherwise qualified.

The station would be the community’s first non-commercial educational FM service.
