Ninth-inning doubles by Alvin Davis and Dave Henderson Thursday night gave Seattle a 6-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals, who fell into a tie with the Angels for first place in the West after their fourth straight loss to the Mariners.

Davis led off the ninth against Dan Quisenberry, who relieved starter Bret Saberhagen with one out in the eighth. Pinch-runner Ricky Nelson moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Gorman Thomas and scored when Henderson doubled down the left-field line. Henderson then scored on a single to center by John Moses.

Saberhagen, failing in his effort to win his 19th game, gave up 11 hits and walked one before leaving for Quisenberry (9-7).

The Royals managed only three hits off six Seattle pitchers. The winner was Ed Nunez (7-2), who pitched to just one batter in the eighth. Dave Tobik earned his first save.

The victory was the Mariners’ 10th in 13 games and their ninth in 10 games with the Royals this season.

Pinch-hitter Ken Phelps hit a two-run single off Quisenberry with one out in the eighth to tie the score, 4-4. Quisenberry came on after singles by Danny Tartabull and Moses and was greeted by Dave Valle’s infield single to second, loading the bases.

Darryl Motley had given the Royals a 4-2 lead with his bases-loaded single in the seventh off Jack Lazorko, who came on after starter Mark Langston issued one-out walks to Lonnie Smith and George Brett. Lazorko got Frank White on a pop foul behind the plate, then hit Steve Balboni to load the bases for Motley.

The Royals tied a club record by going scoreless for 30 innings until Smith hit a two-run homer off Langston with two out in the fifth. That matched a string dating back to May 1981.

Detroit 10, New York 3--Darrell Evans hit two homers, while John Grubb, Kirk Gibson and Alan Trammell each had one to back the eight-hit pitching of Frank Tanana and Randy O’Neal as the Tigers bombed the Yankees at Detroit for a sweep of their three-game series.

The two homers gave Evans the American League lead with 36, one more than Carlton Fisk of the Chicago White Sox.

The defeat extended the Yankees’ losing streak to a season-high seven games and dropped them 5 1/2 games behind the idle Toronto Blue Jays in the East.

Tanana (9-14) walked one and struck out one in seven innings, evening his lifetime record at 144-144.

The Tigers, who hit 12 homers in the series, put the game away early with six runs in the second inning off Joe Niekro (9-13), who was making his first start since being obtained by the Yankees Sunday in a trade with the Houston Astros. Niekro was tagged for 6 runs and 7 hits in 1 innings.

Milwaukee 5, Baltimore 2--Rookie Billy Joe Robidoux and Cecil Cooper hit home runs, and Bob McClure saved rookie Bill Wegman’s first major league victory as the Brewers won at Baltimore.
