Two motorists escaped injury in a head-on collision in Mission Viejo early Friday morning, but that’s where their luck ended.

The Highway Patrol said vehicles driven by Luis Eduardo Martinez, 20, of Laguna Hills and Ricky James Moran, 22, of San Clemente collided on Marguerite Parkway near Avery Parkway.

As a result, according to CHP spokesman Ken Daily: Both vehicles were heavily damaged; both drivers were booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol; both were cited for having expired vehicle registrations, and both were charged with not having proof of insurance.

And to top it off, Daily said, Martinez and Moran got into a fistfight.

“By the time Officers Gil Payne and Jeff Lierly arrived on the scene, the two had, in effect, taken each other into custody,” said Daily, who added that the young men were booked at Orange County Jail under $1,500 bail each.
