Before the Cavaliers took the field against Chatsworth, Cleveland High officials warned several people that there was no smoking allowed near the field.

But nobody told the Cavliers before they went out and smoked the Chancellors en route to a 20-0 victory at Cleveland Friday night.

“We did so crappy in our scrimmage against Venice,” Cleveland Coach Steve Landress said. “Our team saw what happened when they didn’t get off the ball fast enough.”

Elliot Franks got out of the backfield quick enough. The 5-9, 150-pound junior ran eight times for 122 yards, including runs of 33 and 56 yards. Franks didn’t score but he was the game’s leading rusher.

Cleveland capped its scoring in the fourth quarter when Albert Fann ran four yards off center for the score. Fann rushed for 79 yards on 16 carries.

Cleveland started the beating early. After the Chancellors couldn’t move the ball on their second possession, the Cavaliers set up shop at their own 39. On second and eight, running back Franks took the ball 13 yards on a reverse. Quarterback Norman Love then ran 22 yards to put the Cavaliers on the Chatsworth 18. Two plays later, Love tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Knox.

Cleveland, with a little luck and a bad Chatsworth bounce, got the ball back on the ensuing kickoff. Chatsworth’s Spence Durham couldn’t get a handle on the ball on the reception. Either could Kurt Moeller, who recovered the fumble and then let it go himself. Cleveland’s Primitivo Nunez recovered on the Chatsworth seven. On the next play, William Dixon ran the ball in to put the Cavliers up, 14-0.
