355,000 Escape Heat at Beaches; Encore Due Today

An estimated 355,000 beachgoers took advantage of sunshine and unseasonable warmth to head for the shore in Los Angeles County Saturday, and the same kind of weather is expected to continue today.

Temperatures in downtown Los Angeles were expected to approach 90 with clear skies again today, and reach the mid- to upper-90s in the valleys, said Robert Grebe, lead forecaster at the National Weather Service in Los Angeles. Saturday’s downtown high of 88 was six degrees above normal, he said.

“The pressures are a little bit higher in the desert than the coast,” Grebe explained. “This gives us an offshore blow of air from the desert to the coast, which inhibits the sea breeze.”

He noted that Long Beach was 91, hotter than downtown, as a result.
