Andy Bean and Mike Reid matched birdies on the 18th hole Saturday to move one shot ahead of Hal Sutton and into the lead after three rounds of the Southwest golf tournament at Abilene, Tex.

Reid shot a five-under-par 67 and Bean had a 68 for 54-hole totals of 201. Sutton had a 67 for his 202.

Canadian Richard Zokol shot a 64, needing only 11 putts on the back nine, and is tied at 205 with Dan Pohl and Howard Twitty, who shot 68s.

Defending champion Curtis Strange, the PGA’s leading money winner this year, was at 208 after a round of 69, while Ben Crenshaw shot an even-par 72 and was at 212.

Tom Watson, needing to finish 36th or better to boost his earnings to $200,000 for a record ninth straight year, shot a 70 and was at 214.

Bean has not won a tournament in 17 months and has just one victory in the last 3 1/2 years. He held a two-shot advantage early on the back nine but bogeyed the par-three 11th hole when he put his tee shot in a bunker and then three-putted from 15 feet on the 13th hole.

Miller Barber, fighting off the flu he has had for a week, shot a five-under-par 67 to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the World Seniors Invitational at Charlotte, N.C.

Barber, who has a three-day total of 206, birdied five of the first seven holes. He took the lead away from first- and second-round leader Gay Brewer.

Brewer, at 207, birdied the par-three second hole with a 25-foot putt, then carded 14 straight pars before a bunker shot led to a bogey at No. 17. He had a 72.

Bob Toski birded No. 15 and No. 16 to offset bogeys on two other holes and is in third place with a 209 after a 71.

Severiano Ballesteros of Spain shot a seven-under-par 65 for a three-stroke lead entering the final round of the $165,000 International Tournament at Barcelona, Spain.

Ballesteros, who helped Europe score a Ryder Cup victory over the United States last Sunday, had seven birdies to move to 201 for the tournament.

South African Jeff Hawkes, whose 64 was just one shot off the eight-year-old course record set by Tom Watson, was second. He had an eagle and eight birdies in his spectacular round.

JoAnne Carner, the LPGA Tour’s all-time leading money-winner, shot her second straight round of two-under-par 70 to join rookie Penny Hammel and Missie McGeorge in the 36-hole lead of the $250,000 Konica San Jose tournament at San Jose.

Carner had three birdies, including a 60-foot putt on the par-four, 338-yard third hole, to go with a single bogey; Hammel, the first-round leader with a 66, slipped to a 74, while McGeorge posted a 71. They were tied at 140.
