The driver of a pickup truck attempting to pass a tractor-trailer on the shoulder of the Riverside Freeway was killed Tuesday when his vehicle veered out of control, skidded backwards across four lanes of traffic and rolled over on the median strip, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Herbert B. Brown Jr., 23, of Anaheim, was thrown from the truck as it rolled on the grassy freeway median strip just east of Weir Canyon Road in Anaheim Hills, the CHP said. The accident occurred on the westbound lanes about 6:30 p.m.

Motorists told investigators that Brown was traveling at about 80 m.p.h. and used the partially paved shoulder of the road to pass the truck because there were other cars to the left of the rig. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.
