Local News in Brief : Burbank Gives Landfill Expansion Interim OK
- Share via
The Burbank City Council has tentatively approved a plan to expand a 24-acre landfill by about 10 acres during the next 10 years.
The approval stopped short of accepting a recommendation by Public Works Director Stephen Magnuson that the landfill, situated in the vicinity of Bel Aire Drive and Vista Ridge near the Starlight Amphitheatre, be expanded to 86 acres to meet city needs through the year 2001. Magnuson said the existing landfill would fill up by 1990.
Council members approved an environmental impact report that accepted the site as suitable for an 86-acre dump. But they approved only a 10-acre expansion for the time being, adding a provision requiring the council to re-evaluate the landfill in 10 years to determine if alternative waste-disposal plans would be better than more growth.
