Garamendi Won’t Run for Gov.

State Sen. John Garamendi (D-Walnut Grove) today announced he was ending his exploratory campaign for governor, leaving Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley without major opposition if the mayor decides, as expected, to enter the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

Garamendi, who lost to Bradley in the 1982 primary, said he would have had to wage a highly negative campaign in order to have any chance of beating Bradley. “I respect the mayor too much (to run such a campaign),” he said.
