POP MUSIC REVIEWS : LUCY SHOW: NEITHER FUN NOR FUNNY

Share

If the real Lucy sues the rock group known as the Lucy Show, it shouldn’t be just for using her name. It should be for attaching her name to music that’s dull, unoriginal and--worst of all--humorless.

The England-based quartet, led by transplanted Canadians Mark Bandola and Rob Vandeven, had a chance at the Lingerie on Wednesday to show there was more to the group than is evident on its new debut album. The only thing it showed more of was echo.

The Lucy Show plays a brand of neo-psychedelic pop built around dense, droning guitar-bass patterns, pounding beats, and ominous, Bowie-esque vocals that withdraw into a haze of reverberation that’ll have you reaching for the Contac.

It might be a decent enough vehicle for a charismatic artist with something to communicate, but in the case of the Lucy Show (which also plays at Texas Records in Santa Monica Sunday afternoon) that’s all there is. The group never conveys the sense that it’s on to something distinctive, so it never gives you any reason to care about what it’s doing.
