Cal State Fullerton Turns Back San Jose, 20-18, for First Win
It wasn’t exactly the kind of game you’d like to showcase on national television, but Cal State Fullerton picked up its first win of the year Thursday night, 20-18, over San Jose State at Spartan Stadium before 12,126 fans and an ESPN audience.
Fullerton (1-3 overall and 1-0 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn.) struggled but made fewer mistakes than the Spartans (1-4 and 1-2).
The game see-sawed back and forth, with Fullerton’s Corn Redick having a hand in the first 16 points. He was tackled in his end zone while returning a punt for a safety that put San Jose ahead, 2-0. Then he caught touchdown passes of 60 yards (on a halfback-option from Todd White) and 35 yards (from quarterback Kevin Jan).
The Spartans regained the lead, 15-14, after a pair of touchdown passes by Doug Allen, who replaced injured starter Jon Carlson in the second quarter.
But the Titans went ahead for good late in the third quarter when Jan hit Wade Lockett on a 19-yard pass in the corner of the end zone.
