Stateline, home of several large casinos, and Zephyr Cove will now be known simply as Lake Tahoe, Nev.

The Douglas County Commission officially changed the names of the south shore communities this week at the request of local business groups who argued that the change will make it easier to promote the communities.

“People constantly refer to us as Lake Tahoe, Nev., anyway,” said Randy Lane, chairman of the South Lake Tahoe Marketing Council. “The name change just seemed like one of those straight and simple ideas that seemed to meet with enthusiasm.”

However, communities on the north shore of Lake Tahoe cried foul. The Incline Village Chamber of Commerce says the name change could hurt its area.

The new “Lake Tahoe” is not to be confused with the adjacent city of South Lake Tahoe, which is in California.
