Two men and two dogs were rescued Sunday by a Navy guided missile cruiser and a Coast Guard helicopter when their fishing boat began to sink 123 miles west of Point Loma, a Coast Guard spokeswoman said.
Ron Dioron and Steve Green, both of San Diego, were taken aboard the ship at 1:45 p.m. after attempting unsuccessfully to drain their boat by using pumps that had been dropped to them earlier by a Coast Guard helicopter, said Coast Guard Lt. Claudia Wells. The Coast Guard later flew them ashore.
Wells declined to identify the Navy ship, which she said was on maneuvers, but other reports stated it was the Truxtun. The cause of the leak was undetermined. The boat, which Wells said was owned by Dioron’s father, was valued at $90,000.
