Spectacular Fire Erupts in Wilshire High-Rise

Share

A spectacular greater-alarm fire erupted Monday night on the 21st floor of the 34-story Equitable Life Building in the Wilshire District, sending flames soaring into the night and broken window glass crashing to the street below.

The flames were contained in just 55 minutes, however, and only one minor injury was reported.

Los Angeles City Assistant Fire Chief Joseph Lockwood said 180 firefighters from 29 engine companies and three helicopters responded to the blaze, which broke out in law offices on the north side of the building at 8:29 p.m.

Elevators could not be used, Lockwood said, and the firefighters had to climb 21 stories to attack the flames.

Cause of the blaze was under investigation and there was no immediate estimate of damage.
