A 2-year-old girl was killed and her 4-year-old brother suffered minor injuries Friday in an accident that was triggered when they released the safety brake of the family car, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Heidi Jimenez, 2, was pronounced dead at Fallbrook Hospital of massive head injuries from the 11:30 a.m. accident, a hospital spokeswoman said. Antonio Jimenez suffered minor scrapes and was later released.

CHP Sgt. Jerry Griffith said the children climbed into the car their mother, Maria E. Jimenez, had just parked in front of their house on Alvarado Street. The children released the parking break and took the transmission out of gear, causing the car to begin rolling, Griffith said. The two were soon ejected from the rolling car. Antonio was thrown clear of the car, Griffith said, but Heidi fell beneath it and was run over.
