Family of Slain Hostage Secluded at N.Y. Home

The wife and daughters of Leon Klinghoffer, the U.S. hostage slain by hijackers of the Achille Lauro liner, were in seclusion Sunday at the family’s New York home, observing traditional Jewish customs of mourning.

A family friend, Letty Simon, said from the Klinghoffer’s East Village apartment that plans for a memorial service have not yet been made.

“They’re at home in seclusion now,” she said.

Traditionally, Jewish families in mourning stay at home with close friends and relatives, a custom called “sitting shiva.
