Home-Built Plane Crashes, 2 Die

A home-built plane crashed as it took off from the Van Nuys Airport this morning, killing its pilot and a passenger, authorities reported.
The craft went down at 10:25 a.m. as it took off from the north end of the runway. The single-engine plane crashed and burned on grass just north of Roscoe Boulevard, an airport spokesman said. Neither the pilot nor the passenger were immediately identified.
