Jean-Marc Lanthier’s power-play goal at 5:43 of the third period helped the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders Monday night at Vancouver.

Vancouver goaltender Richard Brodeur faced 25 New York shots and made several difficult saves in the third period when the Islanders twice closed to within one goal.

Taylor Hall, Tony Tanti, and Petri Skriko also scored for the Canucks, who won their second game in three starts.

The Islanders got goals in the final period from right wings Mike Bossy and Pat Flatley.

Brodeur’s toughest saves came early in the final period after Bossy scored to narrow the margin to 2-1. Brodeur twice smothered loose pucks in scrambles while the Canucks were shorthanded to frustrate the Islanders’ comeback bid.

Buffalo 6, Detroit 1--John Tucker scored two goals at Buffalo as the Sabres handed the winless Red Wings their third straight defeat.

Phil Housley, Lindy Ruff, Gilles Hamel and Gil Perreault each scored for Buffalo and Gerard Gallant scored for the Red Wings, who haven’t won a game in three starts this season.

After the teams exchanged first-period goals (Buffalo’s Phil Housley and Detroit’s Gerard Gallant), the Sabres scored on a power-play goal by Lindy Ruff and on a shorthanded goal by Gillies Hamel to take a 3-1 lead in the second period.

Tucker scored twice and Gil Perrault added a goal for the Sabres in the final period.
