There Is Still Time to Enter a Number of Recipe Competitions

There’s still time to enter your favorite almond recipe in the Blue Diamond Almond Recipe Contest, sponsored by the California Almond Growers Exchange. Deadline for entry is Oct. 31, and the contest is open to all California residents 18 years old and older.

Grand-prize winner receives $500 and a selected almond cooking item once a month for one year. First prize in each category is $250, second prize is $100 and third prize is the “New Almond Cookery” cookbook.

To enter, contestants must create an original recipe using Blue Diamond almonds in one of three categories: appetizers/salads, entrees or desserts. Every recipe must include at least 1/2 cup natural raw almonds in any form--blanched, sliced, diced, slivered, ground, flavored or whole and natural. Entries also must include the front panel from a cellophane package of Blue Diamond cooking almonds or the Blue Diamond logo drawn on a 3x5-inch card.

Print or type the recipe on a plain piece of 8 1/2x11-inch paper. Include name, complete address and name of recipe category in the top right-hand corner. List every recipe ingredient with exact measurements and give complete directions for preparation, number of servings, size of pan and describe any utensils or cookware used, as well as times and temperatures used. Ingredients should be readily available.

Frieda’s Finest Produce Specialties Inc., is accepting entries through Dec. 1 for its Consumer Specialty Recipe Contest. First prize is $300, second prize is $200 and third prize is $100.

To enter, submit a recipe that uses at least two Frieda of California products in one of four categories: main dish, vegetable, salad and hors d’oeuvres. Recipes must be typed or printed on an 8 1/2x11-inch piece of paper. Name, address, telephone number and category designation must also be included on the recipe. Each recipe submitted must also be mailed with the labels from the Frieda products purchased and an official entry form. Entry forms are available at local supermarkets or directly from the company. To receive an entry blank by mail, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Frieda’s Finest Produce Specialties Inc., P.O. Box 58603, Los Angeles 90058. Send contest entries to the same address.

Winners will be notified by telephone or mail, and prizes will be issued by Jan. 31, 1986.

Frieda’s products include packaged chop suey, egg-roll wrappers, tofu, miniature carrots, clover radish sprouts, black-eyed peas, butternut squash, gold table queen squash, Anaheim chiles, cut mint, spaghetti squash, lima beans, jicama, shallots, white pearl onions, enoki mushrooms, gold nugget squash, sweet dumpling squash, orange buttercup squash, jalapeno chiles, yellow chiles and watercress.

Kraft Inc., makers of Philadelphia Brand cream cheese, is accepting entries through Jan. 31 for its “Philly” Hall of Fame Recipe Contest, which seeks creative recipes using cream cheese.

Winners will be selected from one of four categories, and each will receive a prize package, which includes round-trip air fare for two to Philadephia, limousine transfers, a sightseeing tour, tickets to a special event and $500 cash. Plus, all four winners will be featured in the November 1986 issue of Better Homes and Gardens Magazine.

Recipes must include at least one eight-ounce package of the company’s cream cheese. Four categories are offered, and one winner will be chosen in each. The categories are: cookies and desserts; cheesecakes; appetizers and snacks, and main and side dishes. Enter as often as desired, but mail each entry separately and include the proof of purchase seals from two eight-ounce packages of the cream cheese.

Print name, address and telephone number, category and recipe name on 3x5-inch piece of paper. On an 8 1/2x11-inch piece of plain paper (using one side only), print or type the complete recipe. Mail entries to “Philly” Hall of Fame Recipe Contest, P.O. Box 87215, Chicago, Ill. 60680-0215.

The 12th annual National Farm-Raised Catfish Cooking Contest is under way, and the Catfish Farmers of America will be accepting recipes ideas until Feb. 14, 1986.

Recipes may be submitted for any category: baked, poached, broiled, smoked, in appetizers, soups, salads or main dishes. Recipes must include farm-raised catfish as the main ingredient. Five finalists will be notified in mid-April and will receive an expense-paid trip to Jackson, Miss., to participate in the cook-off June 6. First prize is $2,000, second prize is $1,000 and third prize is $500. There will be two runners-up prizes of $250 each. Contestants may enter no more than three recipes, and each must provide four to six servings. Entries must include the words “Farm-Raised Catfish” in the title and each must be legibly written.

Each finalist will be responsible for furnishing ingredients (except the fish), cooking utensils and all other materials necessary for the preparation of the entry. All food must be prepared on the premises of the contest location.
