The Inter-American Press Assn. on Wednesday presented The Times with its Tom Wallace Award for the best coverage of Latin America by a U.S. newspaper in 1984.

The association, a grouping of about 1,000 newspapers in both North and South America, cited Times correspondents William D. Montalbano, Dan Williams and Juan M. Vasquez for their series, “Central America: Year of Decision.” Washington bureau reporter Doyle McManus also contributed to the series.

Montalbano accepted the award on behalf of The Times from Colombian President Belisario Betancur. It was The Times’ second award this year for its Latin American coverage. Last spring, the Overseas Press Club cited Montalbano, Vasquez and correspondent Juan de Onis for their series on the Mexican economy.
