FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Jones Breaks School Mark by 29 Seconds

Senior Greg Jones led a 1-2-3 finish for Alemany and shattered the school’s cross-country record by 29 seconds Thursday as the Indians defeated Del Rey League rival Crespi, 20-36.

Jones ran the Alemany course in 16 minutes, 11 seconds. The record was 16:40.

Teammates Jose Haro and Mike Thomas also finished under the former mark. Haro finished second with a time of 16:29, and Thomas’ time of 16:30 was good for third.

The league win improved the Indians’ record to 4-1 and kept them tied for second place with Notre Dame. Undefeated Loyola leads the league.

Alemany’s girls team also improved to 4-1 with a 19-44 San Fernando Valley League win over Chaminade.

Soibhain O’Reilley captured first place after leading throughout the race and holding off a late surge by Chaminade’s Wendy Wibbels. O’Reilley’s time was 19:17, one second better than Wibbels’.

An L. A. Lutheran victory night over L. A. Baptist would have moved the two teams into a first-place tie in the Alpha League.

The Lions almost pulled it off, but L. A. Baptist held on to extend its Alpha League winning streak to 48. The match was not a rout, however. It took the Knights the maximum five games to defeat L. A. Lutheran, 15-4, 6-15, 15-6, 6-15, 15-13.

The victory put the Knights (10-0 in league, 11-1 overall) two games ahead in the standings over the Lions (8-2 in league).

Senior setter Erika Johnson had 11 kills for L. A. Baptist. Junior Laurie Evans added nine kills and senior Erin Marasca had seven blocks.

Taft cross-country runners outdistanced Monroe and Venice at Pierce College to take first place in a City triangular meet.

Taft sophomore Marlon Rodriguez finished first in 16:40. Eric Kobrine, another Taft sophomore, finished in 17:18 to place fourth.

Taft, which has won its only two meets, had 29 points to Monroe’s 42 and Venice’s 54.

Reza Tamaey scored twice, and Francisco Matheu and Danny Spector each added a goal to pace North Hollywood to a 4-2 nonleague soccer victory over Poly in a season opener for both teams.

Mitchio Kobashi scored on her last 10 serves of the the third game as Simi Lutheran swept California Christian of Sepulveda, 15-5, 16-14, 15-8.

Junior Laura Cowen had seven kills and freshman Patti Miller had six assists as Simi Lutheran improved its Heritage League girls volleyball mark to 4-2 and its overall record to 5-5.

Chaminade remained unbeaten in San Fernando Valley League play by posting a convincing 15-2, 15-4, 15-7 victory over Corvallis in girls volleyball.

Chaminade, ranked fourth in the Southern Section’s 4-A Division, is 10-0 in league and 14-1 overall.

The Eagles had 25 service aces and 32 kills in the match.

Oakwood rebounded from a one-game deficit for a 15-8, 4-15, 11-15, 15-6, 15-9 Liberty League victory over host First Lutheran.
