Tennis Roundup : Lendl, Leconte Gain Australian Open Final
Top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia powered his way to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Paul Annacone in the semifinals of the $285,000 Australian Indoor championships Saturday night at Sydney, Australia.
Henri Leconte of France, seeded No. 5, defeated eighth-seeded John Fitzgerald of Australia, 6-3, 6-2, and will meet Lendl in today’s final.
Leconte holds a 5-2 tournament record over Lendl.
Argentine teen-age sensation Gabriela Sabatini defeated Linda Gates, 6-3, 6-4, at Tokyo to win the women’s singles title of the 14th Japan Open.
The men’s singles final today will be an All-American match between Jimmy Arias and Scott Davis. Arias beat Glenn Michibata of Canada, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, and Davis downed Johan Carlsson of Sweden, 6-4, 6-1, in the semifinals.
Top-seeded Pam Shriver downed Steffi Graf of West Germany, 6-4, 6-3, and Sweden’s Catarina Lindquist beat second-seeded Claudia Kohde of West Germany, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, in the semifinals of a $175,000 Grand Prix tournament at Filderstadt, West Germany.
