French Plan Nuke Test in Pacific
A French delegation headed by Prime Minister Laurent Fabius flew today to the Mururoa atoll in the Pacific to witness an underground nuclear test in defiance of regional governments and ecologists.
The Defense Ministry did not say when the test would take place, but news reports said it could happen as early as Thursday. The 12-member group included newly appointed Defense Minister Paul Quiles, who took over following the scandal over the bombing of the Greenpeace protest ship Rainbow Warrior July 10 in Auckland, New Zealand. Two French secret service agents have been charged in the case.
