South County : Residents Offered Free Disposal of Toxic Waste

Share

The county’s hazardous waste program will sponsor a roundup of household toxins Nov. 2 at the Chet Holifield Federal Building at 24000 Avila Road, Laguna Niguel.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., county residents will not be charged for disposal of products that contain toxic chemicals. The county advises residents to bring their waste in original containers or in specifically marked containers that are not leaking.

Bob Griffith, director of the county’s hazardous waste program, said state law requires all people to dispose of any hazardous waste through a licensed disposal company. He said since these companies are usually expensive, the county decided to provide residents with a realistic alternative for ridding themselves of toxic materials.

Residents will be able to drive up to the disposal site, Griffith said, but will not be allowed to get out of the car. He said county environmental health officials will take the containers out of the car’s trunk--the material should not be inside the car--and identify the containers.

The waste will then be turned over to Roehl Disposal Service, the Wilmington-based disposal company that the county has hired.
