About 150 people were evacuated from the Hyatt Hotel in Commerce after a large electric sign atop the six-story building erupted in flames. No one was hurt in the blaze, which was extinguished in 13 minutes. Damage was confined to the sign, Los Angeles County fire officials said. But the 283-room hotel’s coffee shop was extensively damaged by water from an automatic sprinkler system. Damage was estimated at $100,000, and fire officials said the blaze appeared to have been caused by an electrical short circuit in a transformer.
