Challenger Gary Kasparov won the 19th game in the world chess championship Friday after defending champion Anatoly Karpov admitted defeat without resuming play, a move that gave the contender a 10 1/2 to 8 1/2-point lead in what was seen as a turning point in the 24-game series.

Kasparov now has won four games to Karpov’s two, bringing him to just two wins away from being named world champion. The series is won by the first player to win six games or 12 1/2 points.

The game was adjourned Thursday night on the 42nd move with Kasparov, who was playing white, in a winning position.

The Tass news agency said Karpov “acknowledged his defeat without resumption in the 19th game.”

The 34-year-old champion conceded defeat after his team of seconds spent a tense night trying to salvage the game, which was adjourned with the black king in check.
