Tinley Wins Triathlon, Breaks Record

Scott Tinley of San Diego, runner-up to Dave Scott the past three years, won the Ironman Triathlon World Championship Saturday.

Tinley, 29, broke Scott’s year-old record, finishing in 8 hours 54 minutes 50 seconds.

Chris Hinshaw of Saratoga, Calif., who had led after the 2.4-mile swim and 112-mile bicycle ride, was second in 9:16:40. The third event was a 26.2-mile marathon.

In third place was Carl Kupferschmid of Switzerland in 9:26:32, followed by Hannes Blasche of West Germany in 9:32:15 and Tom Charles of Gillette, Wyo., in 9:35:14.

Joanne Ernst, 26, of Palo Alto, Calif., led the women in 10:25:22. She was 51st overall, just off the women’s record of 10:25:13 set last year by Sylviane Puntous of Montreal.
