Covina : Law Requires Fireproof Roofs
New roofs in the city must be built with fireproof materials under a new city ordinance that takes effect Nov. 14. Builders of new homes and homeowners who are replacing roofs must comply with the law, which requires the use of fire-retardant roofing materials such as ceramic tile, clay or concrete.
Wood-shake or shingle roofs treated with fire-retardant chemicals are allowed under the ordinance. City officials hope the new ordinance, which was approved by the council recently, will eventually eliminate the combustible roofs in the city. City officials estimate that about 70% of the city’s existing roofs are built of combustible materials.
