Anaheim : Firm Pulls Out of Pact; Cites Conflict of Interest

As the City of Anaheim and the California Angels prepare to take their two-year-old parking lot battle to court today, an accounting firm that had contracted with the city for consultation has pulled out of its agreement because it also does work for the Angels.

Citing a potential conflict of interest, Arthur Anderson & Co. told city officials it would not help the city with strategic planning because it performs an auditing service for the Angels, Anaheim Redevelopment Agency Executive Director Norm Priest said.

The firm had a $50,000 contract with the city to help officials develop a planning process that would determine what the city would look like in the future.

This week, city officials began looking for a new consultant, Priest said.

Mayor Don Roth said it was not unusual for a company, especially law firms, to cite pending litigation as a possible conflict and terminate an agreement.

The city and the baseball club are at odds over multimillion-dollar development proposed for part of the Anaheim Stadium parking lot.
