Sony Corp. of America, the U.S. marketing, manufacturing and distributing arm of the Tokyo-based electronics giant, announced a restructuring of its organization and some top management changes.

Kenji Tamiya was promoted to chairman and chief executive from president and chief operating officer, posts that will now be filled by Neil Vander Dussen.

As part of the reorganization, the Park Ridge, N.J.-based company, which accounts for more than one-third of the parent company’s total sales, was divided into eight product divisions to help Sony “respond more effectively” to its markets.

Previously, the subsidiary consisted of three divisions covering consumer products, communications products and industrial equipment, primarily electronic components.

Under the new structure, Sony Corp. of America will have separate divisions for televisions and other consumer image-display products, videotape recorders, consumer audio products, professional audio equipment, communications products, computers and other information products, components and overall consumer sales.

Tamiya has been with Sony for nearly 25 years, the last 17 of which were in the United States.

Vander Dussen was promoted from president of Sony’s U.S. marketing group.
