Canadians to Present Shakespeare Evening

To honor that hallmark of Canadian theatrical achievement, the Stratford Festival of Canada, UCLA Chancellor and Mrs. Charles E. Young (Sue) and the Consul General of Canada Joan Winser and her husband, Frank, host “An Evening of Shakespeare” Saturday evening.

The occasion marks the opening-night performance of Stratford’s production of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” at the James A. Doolittle Theater in Hollywood.

Afterward, the foursome entertains at Arbat restaurant (formerly the Brown Derby). Among the invited are the Premier of Ontario and Mrs. David Peterson, Gov. and Mrs. George Deukmejian, Anne Bancroft and Mel Brooks, the Walter Matthaus and the Cary Grants. There, too, will be UCLA College of Fine Arts Dean Robert H. Gray and UCLA Center for the Arts Director Pebbles Wadsworth.

This is the first time in its 32-year history that the classical repertory company has embarked on a major tour of the United States with two plays in repertory, “Twelfth Night” and “King Lear.” The tour begins here, and UCLA Center for the Arts is presenting the 10 performances.

Along Comes Mary will cater the party, and we hear Domaine Chandon will cause the Chandon Napa Valley Brut to flow.

Sir Alec Guinness, Julie Harris, Hume Cronyn, Jessica Tandy, Maggie Smith and Peter Ustinov are among performers who have graced the festival stages.

We’re told In the Wings--a new coterie of young professional men and women supporting the Music Center--is a fun, attractive group. They celebrate the completion of their “Sampler Series” drive Saturday evening in the Tower Room of City Hall with a cocktail reception.

The Sampler Series is a package of four tickets to a variety of theatrical and musical events. It’s designed to introduce younger audiences to the Music Center. Wings’ members have sold more than 650 Samplers, with Don Moulton of Redondo Beach leading the winning team, and Andi Anderson of Culver City, Brad Dietz of Hancock Park and Susan Janes Hilton of Los Angeles, first, second and third in individual sales.

Catherine Hunt Ruddy is In the Wings president; Frank Hobbs, executive vice president, headed the Sampler project. Now Susan Hilton plans the party: Somerset Caterers will set the tables with Oriental, Indian, French and Italian hors d’oeuvres.

The best way to get a head start on Christmas shopping is to visit the fourth annual Galleria of the Art Museum Council of Los Angeles County Museum of Art next Wednesday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center at UCLA, says council member Dana Maltz.

Box lunches will be a nicety as shoppers purchase works in wood, glass, ceramics, weaving and jewelry.

All proceeds go to the museum’s arts acquisition fund.

The Costume Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art never fails to meet in style: Nov. 21, the Council and Neiman-Marcus host a benefit in Beverly Hills to chat with James Galanos and see a presentation of his fur collection.

Mrs. Gerald Labiner is benefit chairman.

Donations will be used for acquisitions for the costume and textile department.

Carl and Joan Terzian are busily arranging a series of events for their Washington friends, Sen. and Mrs. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, when they arrive in town for two days.

One is the reception Monday evening in the Hall of Health of the California Museum of Science and Industry hosted by Robert Sloane, chairman of the Hospital Educational Foundation, and Steve Gamble, president and head of the Hospital Council of Southern California.

The senator is expected to discuss his recent trip to Moscow to meet Mikhail S. Gorbachev as a prelude to the forthcoming summit meeting between President Reagan and the Soviet leader.

Greek music and a lot of “Mystique” will characterize the benefit Holly Mitchell Fashion Show and Music Extravaganza Saturday at the Century Plaza. The St. Nicholas Ladies Philoptochos Society of Northridge, which has been raising funds with fashion shows (Travilla and Michael Novarese) for more than 26 years, is being lead this year by Lorraine Roukis, chairman.

Benjamin S. Bloom, author of the recent “Developing Talent in Young People,” will address a dinner gathering of USC’s Town and Gown on Thursday and receive the USC School of Education’s second annual Lifetime Achievement in Education Award from the school’s dean, Dr. John B. Orr. Bloom is the Charles H. Swift Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago and professor of education at Northwestern.

Nine O’Clock Players, those stage-struck actresses of the Assistance League of Southern California, are doing “Beauty and the Beast” this year for the happiness of children who come to watch. Public performances are weekends through Nov. 24 at the playhouse, 1367 N. St. Andrews Place, Hollywood. Saturday performances are at 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m., and on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $4.

On Thursdays, the Players bus children for two free performances.

This year the youngsters are watching Mrs. Roger Engemann as the Beast and Mrs. William Renwick as the unselfish Beauty in an original musical version by theatrical director Rob Bowers. Pianist Mrs. Raymond Hunter Jr. will play for all performances.

The Exceptional Children’s Foundation Women’s Auxiliary has lots of entertainment support for its Casino Night benefit Saturday at the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium in Culver City.

Chairman Mrs. Paul Mitchell is presenting “Haute Ecole,” a demonstration of dressage for the Pet Protectors League picnic lunch Saturday at the Hoffman Ranch in Rolling Hills. Zola DaVirro and Louise Koch will perform Grand Prix Dressage to raise funds to rescue and place stray and abused animals, including horses.

The Starlight Foundation exists to grant wishes to terminally, chronically and critically ill children. Saturday evening on the Queen Mary, supporters will attend “Le Hot Jazz 1985.” There will be dining, dancing, gambling, a silent auction and celebrities on hand for the benefit. It’s hosted by the National Home Fashions League Southern California chapter to raise funds for both the league and the Starlight Foundation. Tickets are $75 per person.

Actress Emma Samms will accept an achievement award for her contributions to Starlight. KJOI announcer Burton Richardson will be emcee.
