Government’s Sanctuary Case

Share

The peevish Los Angeles Times is again floating its liberal colors with the Sanctuary editorial.

The usual left-wing argument supporting illegal immigrants from El Salvador is that they are fleeing persecution in their homeland, rather than just emigrating to this country looking for jobs. If this were the case, why were the United Nations refugee camps in Honduras, Costa Rica and Mexico bypassed? The United Nations High Commission on Refugees has established these safe havens for displaced Central American refugees of all categories.

Nicaraguan refugees fleeing the repressive Marxist government in Nicaragua have been ignored by Sanctuary leaders and the reason is obviously political: the leaders are only interested in activities that oppose the Reagan Administration’s Central American policies. Refugees from a democratic, albeit right-leaning, government do not serve their ultraliberal philosophy.
