Share

The National Park Service is seeking information on wildlife sightings in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, Park Service officials say.

Daniel R. Kuehn, superintendent of the mountain park, said wildlife such as mule deer, mountain lions, bobcats, badgers, raccoons, weasels, reptiles, migratory birds and birds of prey “are an integral part of the diversity of natural resources within this Mediterranean-type ecosystem of the Santa Monica Mountains.”

Kuehn said recording sightings of these animals “is extremely important” and helps park managers in their research.

Those who have sighted wildlife in the mountains are being asked to send a post card identifying the wildlife and its behavior; describing the location of the sighting, the date, time of day and weather, and giving the observer’s name, address and telephone number.

The information can be mailed to Resource Management, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, 22900 Ventura Blvd., Woodland Hills 91364.

The national recreation area encompasses 150,000 acres of public parkland and private holdings extending from Griffith Park in Los Angeles to Point Mugu State Park in Ventura County.
