Avila Campaign Manager Quits Council Effort
Gilbert Avila, a Republican endorsed by Gov. George Deukmejian to replace former Los Angeles City Councilman Arthur K. Snyder in the Eastside, suffered a blow Thursday when his campaign manager resigned.
The resignation of Jeff Montgomery came only a week before Avila’s major $100-per-person fund-raiser in Eagle Rock on Nov. 14, which a Deukmejian spokesman said the governor plans to attend.
Avila, once the highest-ranking Latino in the Deukmejian Administration, resigned as a special assistant to the governor in July.
Montgomery’s departure leaves Avila without a strategist to devise mailers, considered important to alert voters to the special election, called by the City Council to replace Snyder, who resigned.
Avila said Montgomery’s resignation grew out of a difference of opinion.
“I didn’t want to pay for certain mailers at a certain time,” Avila said.
