Tennis Roundup : McEnroe to Meet Sweden’s Lundgren

Top-seeded John McEnroe advanced one more step toward an unprecedented fourth Stockholm Open title Thursday.

The world’s No. 2-ranked player reached the quarterfinals of the oldest Grand Prix indoor tennis tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Juan Antonio Rodriguez of Spain.

McEnroe became the only American to make it to the round of eight when Tim Wilkison was eliminated by third-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden, 6-2, 6-2.

Also, Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland defeated Thierry Tulasne of France, 6-3, 6-3, and fifth-seeded Anders Jarryd overcame fellow Swede Jonas Svensson, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

McEnroe’s next opponent is Sweden’s newest sensation, Peter Lundgren, who vaulted from 156th to the low 30s in the rankings after winning the Cologne Grand Prix and a satellite event in Norway recently.

The 20-year-old Lundgren, who has a 15-match winning streak, regularly works out with retired Swedish star Bjorn Borg. His style is similar to Borg’s--he stays back on slower surfaces--and his coach is Percy Rosberg, who used to train Borg early in his career.

Marty Laurendeau of Pepperdine upset third-seeded Jorge Lozano of USC, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in the third round of the adidas tournament at the La Quinta Hotel and Tennis Club in La Quinta.

Laurendeau faces fifth-seeded Brad Pearce of UCLA in today’s quarterfinals.

Pearce advanced with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Peter Smith of Cal State Long Beach.

In other third-round action, top-seeded Steve DeVries of California eliminated Neil Broad of TCU, 6-3, 6-3, and second-seeded Ricky Leach of USC beat Mike Briggs, a student at Corona del Mar High School, 6-3, 6-1.

At Tampa, Fla., third-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina and fourth-seeded Carling Bassett of Canada scored easy victories to reach the quarterfinals of a $150,000 women’s tournament.

Sabatina defeated Vicki Nelson, 6-4, 6-1, and Bassett beat Laura Gildemeister of Peru, 6-4, 6-4.
