Huntington Beach : Housing Aid Slated for Single-Parent Families
Using funds from a recently received grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the City of Huntington Beach will initiate a housing assistance program for 25 single-parent families within the city’s Oakview neighborhood.
The program, known as Project Self-Sufficiency, is administered through the Orange County Housing Authority and will disburse up to $172,500 for rent subsidies, child care and job training for the low-income families.
The city has appointed a 10-member task force to develop an action plan and seek private sector matching funds for the program, which should begin next spring, according to Susan Jones of the city’s Housing and Redevelopment Department.
The Oakview neighborhood, bounded by Beach Boulevard, Warner and Slater avenues and Oak Lane, was selected as the target area for the project because of its high percentage of single-parent households and above-average unemployment rate, Jones said.
