Sanctuary Designation to Include Archbishop?

Share
Times Staff Writer

No official church announcement yet, but Sanctuary organizers say that Archbishop Roger M. Mahony will participate in the Dec. 12 ceremony designating Our Lady Queen of Angeles Church--the Old Plaza Church--as a Sanctuary church, meaning the church will participate in the Sanctuary movement. The movement attempts to provide refuge for people fleeing Central America who are here illegally--with the belief that the Refugee Act of 1980 should be interpreted to apply to these situations. The archbishop will celebrate Mass as part of the day’s events, organizers say. Dec. 12 is the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which holds special significance for Latin Americans.

THEY’RE OFF--Marje Everett opened Hollywood Park Wednesday and a lot of her good buddies joined her in the Directors’ Room for lunch and the chance to play a few ponies. Elizabeth Taylor was there, now a familiar at the track, but still causing lots of stares and stirs, stunning in a red and navy Chanel suit with a large bejeweled gold dragon making its way across the jacket. E.T., as she is known lovingly by her buddies in the horsey set, chatted with Robert Wagner and Jill St. John. (Marje Everett’s new poodle, a gift from E.T., is named E.T. Jr.) State Sen. Herschel and Pat Rosenthal said they both had a chance to talk to a star: Pat, when she asked who had left a napoleon in front of the appetizers and Cary Grant said, “I did. I wanted to make sure I got one.” Rosenthal said Elizabeth Taylor said hello to him, “But she probably thought I was someone else.” On hand, Mervyn LeRoy, Adrienne and Vernon Underwood, Rockwell’s Patti Mancini, Nederlander President Stan Seiden and attorney Neil Papiano.

PEOPLE WILL TALK--Word in the halls at ABC Circle films is that just perhaps they won’t be making the announced “Amerika”--the 16-hour miniseries about a Soviet invasion of the United States. Sets are already being built in the Midwest, for the series produced, directed and written by Donald Wrye . . . Look on the hands of the socially secure, and what are a lot of them wearing but pave diamond rings. Sure, but what’s news is where they come from--reportedly a discount house. Really, quel bargain . . . The ad for the L. A. Sports Connection, with model Kelly Emberg (seen around town with Rod Stewart) just might be this year’s pin-up. Harry Langdon is the photog.

FUN-RAISING--The Rodeo Collection’s Rick Allen has come up with the political fund-raising idea of the year. His Dec. 7 event for Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) has him taking over the Bayshore Bowl in Santa Monica--thus contributors can pay $250-a-person to join bowling teams of 10. Expected are Melissa Gilbert, Jane Fonda, Mike Farrell, Rosanna Arquette, Judd Nelson. And they say we’re too slick in California . . . Those clever folks at the Hollywood Women’s Political Committee. The Saturday evening event for the Senate Democratic Campaign Fund is costing $5,000 a couple--but you can meet almost the same cast of U. S. senators at Spago on Saturday morning for $150--and lunch to follow. . . . The Second Selchow and Righter National Trivial Pursuit Challenge for Easter Seals takes place this weekend at the Airport Hyatt. Saturday night is celebrity challenge night, and the public is invited to play with stars like Joe Spano from “Hill Street Blues” or Ed Begley Jr. from “St. Elsewhere.”

POLI-SIGH--There are only men’s names on the invite--11 important men, like Reps. Mel Levine and Henry Waxman, former Deputy Secretary of State Warren Christopher, and former DNC chairman Chuck Manatt, but apparently the Monday reception at 20th Century Fox for Rep. Tim Wirth (D-Colo.) is not a stag affair. Money from women will be accepted too . . .

DEPARTMENT STORES--That’s where some of the best parties are taking place--and just plain folks can get in on the fun too. Like at the May Co., where they’re repeating a great event from last year. From Nov. 27 through Dec. 20, May Co. stores will be places where people can contribute food to LIFE (Love Is Feeding Everyone), the anti-hunger organization run by Dennis Weaver. Dozens of actors will turn out on Nov. 28 to really get the drive going, and you can turn up with your Instamatic and get a great pix for the Season’s Greetings card. Like with Linda Evans at the Laurel Plaza store. Or Danny Thomas and Monty Hall at the Wilshire store. Or with Valerie Harper and Eve Arden at the West L. A. store . . . Dennis Kyte, the author of “The Last Elegant Bear,” greets people at Robinson’s Newport store the morning of Nov. 23 and at the Beverly Hills store that afternoon. Another good place for holiday pix, since he’ll have a lifesize Elegant Bear with him. (Very tame.) At a private party on Nov. 21, Kyte presents the second annual Simon & Schuster Children’s Library donation to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for its Pediatrics Department . . . At the Broadway Century City Monday see the last performance anywhere of the musical review done by Jockey International, which promises a look at underwear through the ages.

THE WEDDING MARCH--That’s what is played by the thick piano-shaped paper invitation to the “Beautiful Wedding” of Lucia DeCarlo and pianist Roger Williams at the “Magnificent Crystal Cathedral.” The recipient simply follows the numbering, presses on the keys and the song comes out. The invite is necessary for admission to the reception following the Dec. 1 afternoon ceremony--and, as it promises, “We will also use this piano to play ‘Here Comes the Bride’ for Lucia!”
