Laguna Beach : OK Expected on Plan for No-Alcohol Teen Club

A nightclub for teen-agers that serves “health drinks” but no alcohol, provides valet parking and would be open to anyone over 15 is planned for a site on Laguna Canyon Road, according to Max Nee, who hopes to open the club.

The California Coastal Commission is expected to act favorably Thursday on Nee’s application for an administrative permit.

Edge, as Nee plans to call his club, “would provide good clean fun” for teen-agers who like to dance, he said. Unlike teen clubs in Los Angeles that have caused alcohol and vandalism problems for the surrounding neighborhoods, Edge will be well-lighted and policed by “muscular but polite security guards,” he said.

“I’ve been in those (Los Angeles) clubs, and I’ve always found them to be dark and dingy,” said Nee, who says the lack of suitable entertainment in Laguna Beach for his teen-age daughter gave him the idea to start his own club. The nightspot, which will have recorded and occasional live music, will also provide valet parking “so the kids won’t go out to their cars and drink,” Nee said.

The club, which would be in a converted industrial building near the Sawdust Festival, could be opened by summer, Nee said.
