THE CRICKET WICKET
It continues to amaze me that people write letters to be published when they know absolutely nothing about the subject in question.
For your records, the wicket in cricket can be either the three stumps as you described in your recent letters, or the playing surface between each set of stumps. Being an outdoor sport, the condition of the playing surface varies. When the condition of the wicket is difficult for the batsman to play on it is known as a “sticky wicket.”
Take it from one who is English, who loves the game of cricket and who can still “bowl a maiden over.”

By the way, the King’s Head Pub XI cricketers thumped Fresno last Sunday. The exact score escaped us, but it’d be meaningless anyway.
