West Hollywood City Councilwoman Valerie Terrigno pleaded innocent today to charges that she embezzled more than $10,000 in federal funds while running a gay counseling agency.

Terrigno, 32, who was arraigned earlier in the day, entered the plea before U.S. District Judge Laughlin Waters. He scheduled trial for Jan. 7, but attorneys said it was unlikely they would be ready by that date. Terrigno was the first mayor of West Hollywood because she was the top vote-getter in the incorporation election in 1984. She still serves on the City Council, but relinquished her post as mayor last summer.
