Five people were injured, three seriously, in a head-on collision Sunday night in the 3100 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Studio City, police said.

The accident occurred about 10 p.m. when a northbound vehicle driven by Shain Gordon, 19, of North Hollywood suddenly swerved into the path of a southbound vehicle, police Sgt. Robert Farkas said. Four ambulances and three Los Angeles Fire Department engine units responded to the accident, Farkas said.

Philip Sperling, 25, of Beverly Hills, driver of the southbound car, and Lynn Allen, 23, of North Hollywood, a passenger in Gordon’s car, suffered multiple broken bones and were taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Farkas said. Both were in serious but stable condition Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Donald Cook, 25, and Mauri Pullinen, 18, both of Glendale and also passengers in Gordon’s car, were taken to Medical Center of North Hollywood. Cook was treated for a fractured hip and Pullinen was treated for minor injuries, police said.

Gordon suffered minor injuries, Farkas said. He said police have asked the city attorney’s office to cite Gordon for driving on the wrong side of the street. It was not known why the car swerved, Farkas said.
