Cypress : College Group Hikes Its 1986 Fund-Raising Goal
The Cypress College Foundation has set a 1985-86 fund-raising goal of $150,000--up $50,000 from last year’s drive.
The foundation was established in 1972 to raise money from the private sector for scholarships, faculty endowments and fellowships, equipment needs and special events.
“The foundation was established because public funding just wasn’t sufficient for the needs of the college,” said John Wagner, executive director of the foundation. He said the need for private aid to community colleges became especially acute after 1978, when Proposition 13 slashed funding for the institutions.
“Money from the foundation allows the college administration to respond quickly to needs as they arise,” Wagner added.
He said that the college’s first organized fund raising for the foundation took place last year. Donations exceeded the $100,000 goal for last year, Wagner said. The drive collected $132,205.
Wagner said that money from last year’s drive was used by Cypress College to help buy more computers. Money from the current drive will be used to renovate science and engineering labs on campus, he said.
