Tennis Roundup : Navratilova Plays Sukova
Top-seeded Martina Navratilova set up a grudge match with Czechoslovakia’s Helena Sukova by beating Australia’s Wendy Turnbull, 6-4, 6-2, Friday in the quarterfinals of the $150,000 New South Wales Open at Sydney, Australia.
The sixth-seeded Sukova defeated Australia’s Dianne Balestrat, 6-1, 6-4, in her quarterfinal match.
Sukova upset Navratilova in last year’s Australian Open, depriving her of the calendar-year Grand Slam she had so coveted.
In other matches, second-seeded Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia defeated Svetlana Cherneva of the Soviet Union, 6-4, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany beat 14th-seeded Christianne Jolissaint of Switzerland, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
In a Tennis Challenge at Canberra, Australia, Tim Mayotte advanced to tonight’s final against Ivan Lendl with a 7-6, 6-3 upset of Sweden’s Mats Wilander. Lendl breezed past Johan Kriek, 6-3, 6-3.
